"With sales exceeding 60 million cases annually the UB Spirits division has a total of 140 brands, out of which 15 are millionaire brands. The products are manufactured in 75 locations across the country, including market leaders in all flavors and categories. This means a huge number of vendors and orders to manage and process.

"We currently use an SAP system to record transactions on our purchases. We need to share a lot of information with the suppliers on purchase order quantities, delivery schedules, quantity of supply accepted and rejected reason for rejections, accounts payable and more. There were multiple levels of manual intervention for sharing of data with relevant vendors and entering vendor responses back into the system. This system resulted in prolonged lead times, inefficient working capital turnover and higher rates of error" explains Mr. Subramaniam.

"The requirement was to automate the entire workflow and speedup the business process. The first challenge was determining the enterprise architecture and second choosing a vendor. Concurrently, our long term goal was to expose our production plan to the supplier and let the supplier plan for delivery of components based on our plan and his agreed share without having to release any purchase orders. This will evolve real-time integration of our SAP system with the supplier's planning system.

"We evaluated several technologies and vendors, and, after a due diligence process and proof of concepts over a period of 6 months we decided on implementing a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), choosing Fiorano to deliver that technology to UB," explained Mr. Subramaniam.
