The Fiorano ITK framework is built on the Fiorano Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) platform to bring its established powerful integration features, and proven reliability and scalability, into the healthcare environment. Fiorano presents its ITK framework: the Fiorano ITK Middleware Broker, to help interconnect ITK systems; and Fiorano ITK Adapters, to help quickly ITK-enable existing and new systems.

Rest-based SOA is an emerging technique of implementing SOA projects centered around document-centric, event-driven loosely coupled, asynchronous, message-based Business Services. While document style interfaces are the norm for generic, Web Services-centric SOA implementations, REST-based SOA takes the notion to a whole new level.

In the traditional web-services centric approach, document-style interfaces are described in a WSDL file, with the constraints on input and output messages being described by strongly-typed XML schemas. The consequent tight-coupling mandates an RPC-style of programming with centralized state management, impeding scalability and flexibility.

In this paper, Steve Craggs of Lustratus Research discusses a new approach to delivering pragmatic, SOA-based value, combining some of the best features of SOA with event-driven principles – message-driven SOA. Message-driven SOA has its roots in the ongoing requirement many companies have to improve integration across different business disciplines and systems, but by bringing in aspects of SOA it offers an easier and more cost-effective response to this need while providing additional SOA benefits such as faster time to market and improved business visibility of operations. At the same time, message-driven SOA offers a tactical response to immediate needs that also remains consistent with the longer-term strategic goals of full SOA adoption.
